Acrylic is the most famous and traditional method of nail reconstrution. Since 40's it has been successfully used in America. At the contrary in Europe acrylic system didn't spread largely because of the economic difficulties in that period. The basic chemical element in acrylic is the methyl methacrylate. The compound used in nail reconstruction is formed by liquid monomers, polymers powder (pink, white or clear) and methacrylic acid (primer). Liquid and powders have to be mixed together to be applied. Before applying it is necessary to clean the nail surface using methacrylic acid so the adhesion would be perfect. The main disadvantages of acrylic are the large aggressiveness on the nail, the poor elasticity and the short duration. Moreover infections and nail diseases are frequent. To wipe away acrylic layers you have to dip the nail into a remover or aceton for 15 minutes.
Acrylic system enhancement step by step
1. Disinfect carefully your own hands and your customer's.
2. Degrease nails using an acetone solvent. Remove all the nail polish.
3. File the nail surface to increase adhesion.
4. Remove the filing dust.
5. Apply the primer.
6. Place the self adhesive forms to create a "C" line.
7. Apply the primer again.
8. Apply the acrylic powder as the primer is still wet. Pick up the acrylic powder with a brush soaked with liquid. Powder and liquid will mix together. Spread this small ball on the form near the nail edge.
9. Give the desired shape using a professional file.
10. Buffer with a block and apply a cuticle oil.
Problems with the acrylic system
An unappropriate use of acrylic can cause heavy problems. Nails can be damaged and even broken so pay attention to follow every single step. For example it's very important to be accurate when filing the natural nail. An uncorrect filing does not improve the adhesion between nail plate and acrylic. Other disorders can occur after applying the primer. Be sure that the primer completely dries after the first application and is still wet when you mix the powder. Liquid and acrylic powder must be mixed in equal parts. Do not spread acrylic next to the cuticle. Moreover do not apply a thick layer of acrylic. Check the quality of your products: do not use acrylic composed by Methyl Methacrylate, a dangerous substance that can cause disease, allergies and other disorders.
